The history of the AEG brand
AEG-Electrolux – perfect in form and function
Steps of a pioneer
Who doesn't recognise the three capital letters? Over the course of its history, AEG, as barely a second enterprise, has become a part of industrial culture in Germany. The foundation stone for the German brand heritage from the AEG house was laid by the Berlin engineer, Emil Rathenau, in 1883 when he acquired the German licence for Edison's lamp patents and created the 'Deutsche Edison Gesellschaft' (DEG) (German Edison Company) in Berlin. The first German electric works was commissioned in Berlin in 1885 and the company was renamed 'Allgemeine Electricitäts Gesellschaft' (AEG) (General Electric Company) in 1887. Two years later, AEG presented the first electrical domestic appliances in an exhibition for accident prevention in Berlin: Irons, tea kettles, egg boilers and curling tong heaters. The company set milestones in the development of domestic appliances and further enhanced its name within German households. Vacuum cleaners, such as the "Dandy" and its successor, the "Vampyr", heaters, refrigerators, electric cookers and washing machines revolutionised household life.

Since then, AEG has continued to sharpen its technological profile and continuously creates innovative products that set industry standards - in form and function. AEG domestic appliances were always one step ahead of their time in the creative stakes - and they embodied the German design culture at a time when terms such as "Corporate Identity" were used a long time before they were defined. Shortly after the turn of the century, AEG became the first company to appoint an industrial designer in the form of artist and architect, Peter Behrens. Behrens was to lastingly shape the entire appearance of AEG. To this day, the well-known and popular AEG brand has stood for timeless, functional, user-friendly design, which continues to receive design accolades - such as the reddot and F-Design-Award. Since 1994, the AEG brand name on domestic appliances has belonged to Electrolux, the world's largest manufacturer of domestic appliances.
